Robbers kill policeman, shoot another in Onitsha

A police officer was yesterday night shot dead by armed robbers at Nkpor market in Idemili North Local Council Area of Anambra State.



The deceased, said to be keeping surveillance under the fly-over in the area was killed by the robbers, while his colleague was shot in the leg during a gun battle about 8.30pm.



The robbers numbering about nine and operating on three motorcycles, had stormed the police sand bag team stationed in the area and opened fire at them, before collecting the Ak 47 rifle of the deceased.

A police source said the robbers, who took the police team unawares, first headed towards where the police vehicle was packed and positioned themselves before striking.

The source added that the injured policeman, who was shot in leg, succeeded in escaping with his gun as he took cover inside the gutter when he was shot.

The Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Hassan Musa, said both the deceased and the injured had been taken to Borromeo hospital and the matter was being investigated.
