Letter to CEO on "developing mission and values for your business".
1. Dear CEO, Having a clear cut Mission and Values for your business is not something you should belittle.
2.These Terms are the most Abstract, abused and Misused words in Business.
3. Defining these Terms must be very difficult for you and I clearly understand. You are not in this Alone.
4. I've noticed you attempted to define your values as being customer driven, integrity, quality service & Excellence.
5. Every descent company espouses these things so it hardly stands out as a mission statement or a set of company values.
6. A good Mission statement & set of values must be real that you literally can feel them. They are practicable and Actionable.
7. The Mission States exactly where you are going while your values, states clearly the behavior that would get u there.
8. An effective Mission Statement Answers one Question: How do I intend to win in this business?
9. With this, you can't be All things to All people, at All Times. It gives Direction to your business.
10. It forces you to define your strengths and your weaknesses and determine how you can marshal them out to your own gain.
12. Every business Decision must be linked to the mission. You must make decisions with your mission in mind.
13. Also, Do not forget that Creating a mission for your business is your Responsibility. It must not be Delegated to anyone.
14. Now, about Values..they are specific, deliberate and very descriptive. Ambiguity is Not Allowed.
15.They are the MEANS to an end (Mission). They literally make the mission Actionable. Values are crafted in line with the mission.
16. Unlike Missions, Everyone in your company should have something to contribute. Getting much participation makes a difference.
17. It gives you more ideas and insight, and gives everyone a sense of ownership and a need to holistically pursue these values.
18. It is also important to create an atmosphere where everyone can make contributions & inputs freely if u intend to get the best.
19. Make sure your Values are very specific in defining what behavior is allowed and what isn't. Don't leave any stone unturned.
20.** But it doesn't stop at developing your mission and values, they must be acted upon and Lived by.
Stay tuned!!!
